Read Her Story

Charlayne Murrell-Smith

When I was growing up, children, were mostly expected to be seen but not heard. However, my outspoken West Indian mother thought differently. From kindergarten through high school, my mother wrote me a note at the end of each school year that always concluded with Shakespeare’s quote from Hamlet “To thine own self be true…” Over time I understood she was nurturing my ability to speak up and stand firm in my truths… and this Uncornered me.
