I was heading back home from Concord to Mattapan after a weekend of AAU basketball. When the man next to me first said it, I wasn’t sure I heard right. “You are one of those n*gger kids.” Twelve year old Jerrell was filled with fear. I ran to a friend’s house, where his mom took me in. She called my mother and the school to share the violation of my childhood, and I let her love envelop me. Today’s Jerrell feels safe to ride those trains again and to forgive. Her love Uncornered me.
