“You won, didn’t you.” Defying all odds, I was poised to be the first woman ever elected District Attorney of Suffolk County. Just two years prior on June 16, 2016, I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. What followed was the loneliest and scariest 18 months of my life. Even surrounded by loving family and friends, I still felt completely alone and abandoned. Betrayed by my own body. Worst of all, my 12 year old daughter saw it all. I was terrified of dying and leaving her motherless. I know how lucky I am to have survived. So when I finally got my daughter on the phone early September 5, 2018, she already knew that I had won. Not only the election, but in life. My daughter Peyton was the one that gave me the strength I needed to keep fighting. She Uncornered me.
