When we heard of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on the way home from church, my mother immediately told my brother and me that we had to serve our country. Can you imagine a Black woman, when all she had in the whole world were her two sons, was telling them to serve in an America where our people were being lynched at the time? But we enlisted in the Armed Forces and served our country as soon as we could. It was our Methodist upbringing that gave us Faith and taught us to do the right thing, which I’ve done all my life. My faith Uncornered me.
